Get
in Line - It's Dancing Time
On
October 17th a Line Dancing event was held at which the Deputy
Mayor and his Wife were present. There was in the region
of forty regular active participants attending, along with several
other guests including Phil Seddon, from the Scarman
Trust, who were all amazed at the enthusiasm and fervour
of the group. The line dancing proved to be very popular and everyone
who took part thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
The
Saunders Park Community Association (SPCA) was
set up by the community to look at ways of addressing problem areas
on the estate. The SPCA is now the recognised umbrella organisation
leading on various projects. Consequently the New Horizons
Group has been set up as The SPCA felt that there should
be more activities available for elderly people within the community.
The
New Horizon Group offers a range of events and activities such as
bingo, line dancing and outings. Many thanks to
the Scarman Trust whose funding has enabled the group to start and
develop. As the project has been successful the funding has continued
and now we are able to work in partnership with other organisations
such as the eb4u Older Persons Project. The New
Horizons group is going from strength to strength and has now created
a social network across the city.
Surprise
Surprise… Congratulations!!
Uncle
Pete has volunteered at Whitehawk Primary school
for two years and is a great help and asset to the school; Pete also
helps at St Mary
Magdalene's and Woodingdean schools. Uncle
Pete helps out in the classroom and at the Breakfast Club and can
turn his hand to anything;
he gives talks on World War II and assists a lot with the art and
craft activities. Uncle Pete is seen by the children as a Grandfather
figure and is very good at keeping the children calm. Annie
Noble,
a teacher, said “Uncle Pete is a breath of fresh
air and has a great sense of humour.” Sophie, a pupil at Whitehawk Primary,
said “Uncle Pete is really lovely.”
For
his 80th birthday the staff at Whitehawk Primary
organised a limousine to pick Uncle Pete up from his home and take
him to the school as a thank you for all his help and hard work.
Uncle Pete was amazed to see all the children waiting for him at
school for his surprise and thoroughly enjoyed his birthday celebration.
Congratulations on your 80th Uncle Pete!!
